The WA Police Legacy Inc assists its beneficiaries, the surviving spouses/partners of Police Officers and their children in various ways. All services provided by Legacy are based on individual assessment and demonstrated need.
The guiding principle for all activities is to ensure that no surviving spouse, partner or child of a deceased Police Officer will ever feel forgotten or in needy circumstances.
The criteria used to assess all applications is based on these questions:
If this officer had not died, what would they have wanted for their family?
What opportunities would they have tried to give their children?
Home visits, Legal and Financial Services, Emergency home repairs and maintenance, respite assistance for carers, special home renovations, emergency accommodation assistance and pre employment education and training assistance.
In addition to these formal packages there are several subsidised events such as group dinners, family Christmas Tree, holiday accommodation and Coach tours that are available during the year. Annual Christmas gifts are sent with a card to all surviving spouses/partners.
Individual areas of financial or emotional support are assessed on a personal basis of need and provided through recognised specialist and professional services.
There are ten categories of Education assistance provided to the children annually.
| Category 1 | Category 2 |
|---|---|
| Pre Primary | Post School TAFE |
| Lower Primary | Tertiary |
| Upper Primary | Pre employment training |
| Lower Secondary | Special Education needs |
| Upper Secondary | Isolated student transport |
All assistance is provided on a demonstrated needs basis and assessed at the value of the need.
Other areas of assistance are with Internet connection for students, special grants to recognise excellence or high achievement and computer repairs for students.
Each child receives an annual Birthday Card and gift voucher as well a Christmas Card. Where practicable, a member of the local Police Staff or a member of the Legacy Board delivers these gifts. In conjunction with Perth Legacy (Joint Services) children are invited to camps, adventure days and social events.
Opportunities are provided throughout the year by individual Police Officers, Units and Stations to provide opportunities for the families to maintain contact with the Police environment. These may be local Police Station Christmas parties, Remembrance functions or invitations to ‘ride along’ for children.
These activities culminate with the Police Service Corporate display of Remembrance which is held in September of each year. On this occasion all Police units and Stations are invited to have public displays of Remembrance and the wearing of the blue checkered ribbon.
A formal function is conducted in the Chapel, Police Academy, Joondalup on this day.
