Constable Gavin Capes was killed on Friday 26 January 2001 when the police aircraft he was travelling in crashed at Newman.

The aircraft was on return from a callout earlier that day to a reported assault.

Senior Constable Philip Ruland, First Class Constable David Dewar and Senior Constable David Everett were also killed in the crash.
